3 Branches of Govt
Legislative Branch: Congress is responsible for proposing and passing laws. It made up two houses, as created in the Great Compromise. The House of representatives had 435 members. Members must at least be 25 years old, live in the state where they were elected, and have been U.S. citizens for seven years. The Senate has two members, or senators per state, senators also represent the interest of the whole state not just the districts.
Executive Branch: Includes the president and the departments that help run the government. Made sure the law was carried out. The president was the most powerful elected leader in the United States. The House of Representatives can impeach, or vote to bring charges of serious crimes against a president.
Judicial Branch: Made up all the national courts. responsible for interpreting laws, punishing criminals, and settling disputes between states. Made up of a system of Federal courts headed by the U.S. Supreme courts. Each state has at least one of the 94 district courts. In 1967 Thurgood Marshall became the first African American justice, and Sandra Day O'Connor became the first female justice in 1981
